2025 Jubilee Year: Pilgrims of Hope
Corporal Works of Mecy
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.
Spiritual Works of Mercy
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs" (USCCA).

What Is an Indulgence?
An indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven in confession. It's not forgiveness of the sin itself (that happens in confession), but a healing of the lingering effects that sin causes in a person’s soul and in the world.
-
Plenary indulgence = removes all temporal punishment.
-
Partial indulgence = removes part of the punishment.
Jubilee Indulgences: What Makes Them Special?
During a Jubilee year, the Church offers the faithful a plenary indulgence under certain conditions. The idea is to encourage deeper spiritual conversion and acts of mercy.

To gain a Jubilee indulgence, one typically needs to:
-
Make a pilgrimage to a designated Holy Door (often in Rome or a cathedral).
-
Go to confession (usually within 20 days before or after).
-
Receive Holy Communion.
-
Pray for the Pope’s intentions.
-
Be free from all attachment to sin, even venial.
